Frequently asked questions about installing a muzzle brake

What is a Crush Washer?
A Crush Washer is technically not a shim, but it is a cone-shaped spring. Is my weapon's accuracy compromised if I use a Crush Washer instead of a shim?
A properly installed Crush Washer will NOT compromise accuracy. We haven't seen any evidence of accuracy degradation in
hundreds of groups and rifles tested. How do you time a muzzle brake?
If you have a muzzle brake that is not symmetrical, you will want the ports to be in a certain position.
Often the small holes have to be at the top, or you have a clear top and bottom. The bottom is often closed to prevent dust and
sand from being blown up. So when you screw on a muzzle brake you want the side ports to be as level as possible. (correctly "timed").
How to Install a Muzzle Brake Using a Crush Washer? First, make sure the muzzle brake/compensator/flash hider threads and barrel are relatively clean and free of dirt, carbon, etc. Then apply a little grease to the Crush Washer to reduce rotational friction as it spins
(it's the spring tension that does the job of holding the muzzle brake in place and maintaining pressure). The direction of the Crush Washer is one of the most common questions, the correct answer is that the contact diameter
of the ring should be the same or smaller than the surface it fits against, in some cases it is cone forward, in others cases
it's cone to the shooter, and in others it doesn't really matter.Place the Crush Washer over the threads of the barrel, then hand-tighten the muzzle brake against the Crush Washer.Use a wrench, socket wrench, or other suitable tool to tighten the muzzle brake a minimum of 90 degrees and a
maximum of 460 degrees to compress the Crush Washer and lock the muzzle brake for correct timing.
(The Crush Washers are made of spring steel and will compress, and at 90 degrees they will reach and maintain a
rotational torque of 20-28ft/lbs until they are completely flat). Please note that a Crush Washer can only be compressed once, after removing the muzzle brake a new
Crush Washer must be used.
If the muzzle brake is regularly removed, we recommend that you secure the muzzle brake with a locknut.

Muzzle thread information

Which muzzle brake / compensator fits my weapon?
First check whether the barrel of your weapon has muzzle threads, and what type of thread this is.
This thread is either a UNEF thread (UNEF = Unified Thread Standard) or a metric ISO thread. You can often find the type muzzle thread of your weapon in the manual or on the manufacturer's website.

• UNEF thread:

UNEF threads used for muzzle brakes / compensators are in 90% of the cases 1/2”X28 TPI or 5/8”X24 TPI threads.

The number before the X stands for the outside diameter (indicated in inches), the number after the X stands for the number
of threads per inch or threads per Inch (TPI)1/2 inch threads have an OD of 12.7mm and 5/8 inch has an OD of 15.87mm.

Type ½”X28 thread (12.7 mm OD, 28 threads per inch) is commonly installed on weapons from American manufacturers and on
some European weapons (AR-15, M16, etc.), including small-bore weapons up to 6 mm in diameter.
diameter, e.g. 22, .223Rem, .222Rem, .224Note that manufacturers such as Oberland Arms often use ISO threads on their AR15 clones. Some US weapons have a
thread of ½”x20 TPIType 5/8”X24 thread (15.87 mm outer diameter, 24 threads per inch) is usually on AR-10 and usually for all calibers up to 8 mm Ø,
applicable for example for: .308win, .300 win mag, 7.62 × 54mm R, 06/30 and others.
• ISO Thread:

Metric threads (ISO threads) are often used by European weapon manufacturers.
This can easily be recognized by the always preceding M, such as M14X1, M15x1, M18X1, etc.The M stands for metric, the number after the M, for example M15X1,
stands for the outer diameter of the screw thread in mm. M15X1 thread has an outer diameter of 15 mm.
The number after the X stands for thread pitch (the distance between the threads in mm), in this case 1 mm.Note that many former Eastern Bloc weapons have the M14x1 left-handed muzzle thread (counterclockwise).
This is often referred to as M14x1LHSo you can easily check with a vernier caliper or ruler whether your weapon has an ISO or UNEF thread and which pitch this thread has.

Muzzle thread Outer diameter

1/2"x28 12,7 mm
5/8x24 15,87mm
M14x1 14mm
M15x1 15mm
M18x1 18mm

• Clamp or twist-on muzzle brake

If your weapon doesn't have a thread on the barrel, you may be able to use a clamp or twist-on muzzle brake.
Note that twist-on muzzle brakes are often only suitable for a certain type of weapon.
For the clamp muzzle brake you need to measure the diameter of the barrel very carefully. If there is no suitable clamp or twist-on muzzle brake for your weapon, you can ask a gunsmith to make threads on your barrel
• Caliber:

The caliber stated with a muzzle brake / compensator is the maximum allowed caliber.
With a muzzle brake in caliber .308 you can use all calibers up to .308.So you can put a .308 muzzle brake on a .233 rifle but not the other way around.

The AKM is a popular variant of the AK-47 rifle, known for its reliability and durability. However, it is important to note that AKM rifles can differ in size, especially between Soviet and Chinese AKM models, but also the Serbian Zastava M70 models. This can affect the compatibility and fitment of AKM parts and components, requiring some modification to ensure proper operation.

The Soviet AKM was the original AKM model and was produced in several factories in the Soviet Union. While the overall design and function of the rifle remained the same, there were variations in manufacturing processes and tolerances that could result in slight differences in dimensions. For example, the location of the gas block on Soviet AKMs may vary slightly, which may affect the fitment of some aftermarket parts.

Chinese AKMs, such as those from Politech, Norinco, and SDM, were manufactured according to slightly different specifications than their Soviet counterparts. This can lead to dimensional differences that may affect the compatibility of some parts and components. For example, the length of the receiver on Chinese AKMs is slightly shorter than on Soviet AKMs, which can impact the fitting of certain stocks, dust covers, or handguards. The official designation of the Chinese AKM is Type 56.

The Zastava M70, on the other hand, is a Serbian designed rifle based on the AKM. It features a machined receiver, which is stronger and more durable than the AKM's die-cut case. The M70 also has a longer handguard and a different gas block design.

As a result of these differences, it is important to be aware of the specific model and origin of your AKM rifle when purchasing parts or components. While many parts are advertised as "drop-in" replacements, some manual adjustments may be required to ensure proper operation.

Adjusting/modifying by hand involves adjusting and changing parts to fit together properly. This includes filing or sanding parts to the correct size or shape, drilling holes or adjusting tolerances, and in extreme cases even welding or soldering.
It is important to note that not all parts or components of the AK-47 need to be modified. However, it is a possibility that should be expected, especially when it comes to aftermarket or non-OEM parts. It is always a good idea to consult a professional gunsmith or do a thorough investigation before ordering or attempting to install any new parts or components. While hand fitting may seem intimidating to those unfamiliar with firearms or mechanical work, it is a common practice among gun enthusiasts and professionals alike. In fact, many gunsmiths specialize in manual assembly and offer services to ensure proper assembly and operation of parts.

The crosshair (or reticle) is composed to its form by combining a vertical and a horizontal line which meet at the centre of the image to form a cross. This cross is used as an aid in aiming at a target. Thin crosshair lines are best suited to aim accurately at targets which clearly marks the area. However, these fine lines can be difficult to see when the background is more complex as for example dense forest area. Thicker crosshair lines are more suitable for this “difficult” backgrounds, but lack the precision of the thinner lines. A option which combines the advantages of thin and thick lines is the so-called duplex crosshair. With duplex crosshair, the lines are thick peripheral and thin centrally. The thick lines can be used by the shooter to quickly find the central point of the crosshair, while the thin lines intersecting in the centre of the crosshairs are for more accurate aiming.

Three types of reticles are distinguished: classic recticles, illuminated reticles and ballistic reticles.

Classic ReticleThe classical, non-illuminated reticle is very versatile, accurate and assembled by adding a thin horizontal line to a vertical line and letting them meet in the exact middle to form the cross. This type of reticle can perfectly be used during good light conditions. During the twilight this type of crosshairs will not function a hundred properly, since it can disappear against a crowdy background or a dense forest. When you primarily go hunting during broad daylight or mild twilight, the classic crosshairs a good and reliable partner for you.

Illuminated ReticleThe illuminated reticle can make the difference for you during difficult or dark circumstances. This way it will be easier to find the target during dusk, twilight or night. When the reticle has an extremely high level of intensity (extra bright), the corresponding reticle can also be used during the day. When the reticle does not have this designation, it is only suitable for dusk, dawn and/or night. In most cases you will be able to manually control the illumination level of the illuminated crosshairs in terms of intensity. This allows to adjust the sight for any type of light condition or situation.

Ballistic ReticleThe ballistic reticle is a perfect partner when you are thinking about taking long range shots or are using the rifle scope for sport shooting. The aiming points under the centre of the cross will help you to calculate the distance on which your target is located. Since you can use these aiming points for calculating the distance, you can also use them to place the perfect long range shot. This way you can easily compensate the drop of the bullet.

If you are going to buy a rifle scope, you can choose from several types and options. In some cases you will have the choice of an adjustment in MRAD or an adjustment in MOA. Through one of these settings, and your reticle determine in a few clicks how much correction is applied to the height and width to get a good shot at the target. If you want to know how to adjust a rifle scope, please refer to our guide "Scope Adjustment". It is possible to work with both a MRAD as a MOA adjustment, however, both types of adjustments require a different way of calculating. Below are two types of calculating and examples of how you calculate with those types.
MRADMRAD stands for mill radians (or MIL for short), based on a radial line (the unit of an angle). A radial is defined as the size of a centre angle of a circle, which the length of the circle is equal to the length of the radius. This type of angle measurement is used to calculate the distance to the target and the correction for the bullet. When calculating in MRAD, you are speaking of MIL, this is 100 yards (91,4m) equal to 1 MIL.

Calculating in MRAD
100 yards (91,4 m) 1/10 MIL= 0.36" of 0.91 cm
100 yards (91,4 m) 1 MIL= 3.6" of 9,14 cm
200 yards (182,8 m) 1/10 MIL= 0.72" of 1.82 cm
200 yards (182,8 m) 1 MIL= 7.2" of 18,28 cm
300 yards (274,3 m) 1/10 MIL= 1.08" of 2,74 cm
300 yards (274,3 m) 1 MIL= 10.8" of 8,00 cm
MOAMOA stands for minutes-of-angle, what is based on degrees and minutes. Because there is 360 degrees in a circle, and for 60 minutes in a degree for a total of 21,600 degrees. This type of angle measurement is used to calculate the distance to a target and to calculate the correction for the bullet impact. Often calculations are made with 1 MOA at 100 yards (91.4 meters), but you need to count on 100 yards with 1.05 MOA. Up to 100 yards there will be no problem with 1 to 100 comparison, but when shooting over longer distances you will be 5 % off and this will result in a miss.

Calculating in MOA
100 yards (91,4 m) 1/4 MOA = 0.26" of 0,66 cm
100 yards (91,4 m) 1 MOA = 1.05" of 2,67 cm
200 yards (182,8 m) 1/4 MOA = 2.1" of 1,33 cm
200 yards (182,8 m) 1 MOA = 2.1" of 5,33 cm
300 yards (274,3 m) 1/4 MOA = 0.79" of 2,00 cm
300 yards (274,3 m) 1 MOA = 3.15" of 8,00 cm
Differences

Basically, both types are equally successful and it does not really matter which one you choose. It's all about how well you know the system your (going to be) shooting with. It all comes down on how you are willing to calculate your shots or how your fellow hunters and/or shooters do it. Actually, it is easier if you can talk about the same calculations instead of having to convert the numbers every time. A known fact is: When you are familiar with MOA, it is not advisable to switch to MRAD.
There are a few differences between the MRAD and MOA, but at the end of the line they do not have great advantage over the other. In that matter you cannot make a mistake in your choice between MOA and MRAD.

∙ A 1/4 MOA adjustment is a little easier to adjust.
∙ MRAD is somewhat easier to communicate with others.
∙ If you think in yards / inches then it is easier to deal with MOA. If you measure in meters / centimetres then you better choose MRAD.
∙ If you have friends who have already chosen a particular type, it is convenient to select the same system.
∙ 90% of the professionals are using MRAD, because there are more options in the MRAD system
∙ Whatever you do, choose the same turrets/reticle.

The most common setting is 1/4 MOA or 1/10 MIL. Technically, the 1/4 MOA clicks slightly more accurate than the 1/10 MIL. The MIL values are somewhat easier to communicate. In addition, the use of cards with MIL are easier to read because they are indicated by 2 numbers only, while the cards with MOA are indicated with four numbers .
Choosing? If you normally think in meters or centimetres, then it is easier to calculate distance with a MIL (MRAD) system. If you normally think in yards or inches, than MOA is the more convenient calculating partner. If you are not going to calculate distances, both types are equally effective.

To find out what is useful, ask yourself these important questions:

∙ How do I communicate my clicks with fellow hunters/ shooters?
∙ Which system are my friends using?
∙ Which system am I familiar with and do I want to calculate?

Furthermore, you can also take the following questions in consideration:

∙ If I have to say how far away something is, do I talk in meters or yards?
∙ If you must indicate how wide a target is, do you talk in centimetres or inches.
∙ Is my distance meter set to meters or yards?
∙ Is your map in yards or meters.

Usually you think in yards and inches if you are American, but that does not mean you cannot go for a MIL setting. For example, the military also frequently use the MIL system because they talk in the metric system.

Adjusting your Rifle Scope

When you ready to start using your rifle scope you will need to calibrate is before you can go shooting. In many cases this can be done by the weapon merchant were you buy and pickup your weapon. But when you decide to buy a new rifle scope or replace your current one, you can also do this yourself. To do this you can use this simple guide.

Step 1. PreparationFor the first step you get a sheet of paper (preferably A4) and draw a vertical line of 15 centimeters in total. After doing this, you attach the sheet to the target board (at least 2 cm thick and 1x1 meter big). At a distance of about 10 meters from the target plate you set up a table and a stool. The support your weapon u can rest the front on a cushion or sandbag.

Step 2. Windage AdjustmentNow we will adjust the windage adjustment, which can be found on the right side of the rifle scope. First we will zoom to the maximum of the rifle scope and focus until the image become crisp and clear. Afterward you will zoom to 4four times magnification and take a first shot on the middle of the vertical line. After firing two more shots you will have a good indication on how far off your shots are right now. Now you will determine the average divergence to the left or right off the vertical line. Depending on the divergence to the left or right you make a correction by making a few "clicks" (for example 5) on your windage adjustment. Finally, you will take 3 more shots and determine the average divergence again so you can
make some adjustments again (clicks).

Stap 3. Elevation AdjustmentTo change the elevation adjust you almost go through the same proces. But in this case, the elevation adjustment is found on top of the rifle scope. For this step you get a new sheet of paper (A4) and draw a horizontal line of 15 centimeters in total. This page is attached to the target plate as well. Afterwards you fire three shots on the horizontal line again in order to find the average divergence above and below the middle. Depending on the divergence up or down you make a correction by making a few "clicks" (for example 5) on your elevation adjustment. Finally, you will take 3 more shots and determine the average divergence again so you can make another set of adjustments (clicks).

Considering other factorsWhen adjusting your rifle scope, you should consider the following factors:

∙ The bullet speed (this has an influence on the drop)
∙ (Cross)winds. Up to 100 yards (91.4m) this is not a huge factor.
∙ When you shoot using a lighter bullet on 300 yards (274,3m) and there is a wind with a speed of 8 km/h, the path can deviate.
∙ The weight of the used bullet will can make a big difference as well, especially on large distances.
∙ Shooting at a given angle can have an influence as well.

*Make sure how many clicks you used to set the rifle scope, this way you can always turn back to point "0".

ParallaxThe parallax deviation occurs when your eye moves in front of the eyepiece of the rifle scope. In those cases, the reticle slightly moves from the target you are looking at. The solution is quite simple: you just need to look straight through your eyepiece. Unfortunately, this is a lot harder than it seems, it just is hard to sit exactly straight in front of your rifle scope. In most cases the rifle scope have been designed with a special parallax setting to make a parallax correction for a certain distance. This setting or adjustment is often found on the left side of the rifle scope (sidewheel) or on the front of the rifle scope (adjustable objective).

Tip. Look through the rifle scope from a slightly different distance so you will start seeing black borders around the crosshairs. Now look through the rifle scope until the black borders are equal around the reticle.

How do Thermal Imaging Cameras work?

Thermal imaging cameras produce extremely sharp and clear images, even during the darkest of nights. Unlike other night vision devices and technology, thermal imaging does not require any residual light to produce a sharp and clear image. Further, it is possible to use such thermal imaging cameras in almost all weather conditions, such as in fog and smoke, making it an ideal solution for nature observation, hunting, security and law enforcement.

Security and Law Enforcement

It is essential for security and law enforcement agencies to be able to make split second decisions while undertaking their work. Police, fire departments and security guards use thermal imaging worldwide.Thermal imaging does not only produce a clear image in complete darkness but also, during the day. The thermal contrast cannot be masked or hidden meaning that a person hidden in the dark or forest (who is normally not visible to other people) can easily be located and seen with the thermal imaging technology. In addition, the image produced by a thermal imaging camera is not affected by the glare of the sun or any other weather conditions.
Personal use

Thermal imaging cameras are also great for personal use. You could use them while spotting wildlife on rough terrain or in the forest. The camera picks up heat signatures from within its surroundings, making it will be very easy to spot animals. Whether it is at dusk, at night, during light fog or any other weather condition, the camera will help you track and follow your target. Because of their versatility, these thermal viewers are also used for detecting wildlife while hunting.

Thermal Imaging vs Night Vision.

Night vision devices also known as the I2 technology, strengthens the small quantities of visible light by a thousand times so that object can be seen during nighttime. Image intensifiers need a certain amount of light, but even the light of the stars and moon can create a clear image during the night. Because night vision devices need a certain amount of light to create an image, a heavy overcast can greatly affect the quality of your image. Furthermore, an excess of residual light may overwhelm the system and thus also affect the quality of the image.

Night Vision: The image is affected while you are directly looking into the ships lighting. Thermal Imaging: The image is not affected while looking directly looking into the ships lighting
Night Vision: The suspect is hiding behind these bushes, but not cannot be spotted Thermal imaging: Even though the suspect is hiding behind the bushes, his heat signature is easily found by the thermal imaging camera.
New Technolgy: InstAlert

InstAlert?is a new addition to the Thermal Imaging camera by FLIR. This unique feature colours the hottest part of your image red. This way, people, animal or any other heat sources can be easily recognized or spotted.
